Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Alerts Public to Law Enforcement Impersonation Scam Targeting Families
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office in Macon is warning residents about a scam where individuals impersonate law enforcement officers, demanding money from family members of incarcerated individuals for their release.
Macon, GA, October 8, 2026 — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public warning regarding a prevalent scam that targets residents by impersonating law enforcement officers. The fraudulent scheme involves individuals falsely claiming to be law enforcement officials and demanding money from family members or friends of incarcerated individuals, often under the pretense of securing the detainee’s immediate release.
Officials stated that the scammers contact relatives of those in custody and insist on immediate payment, typically through wire transfers or gift cards, to resolve legal issues or facilitate the release of the incarcerated person. This tactic relies on the emotional distress and urgency felt by families facing a loved one’s detention.
Specific details regarding the exact number of reported incidents, the names of individuals or groups perpetrating the scam, or the precise amounts of money demanded were not immediately available. Furthermore, the summary did not specify which law enforcement agencies are being impersonated, nor did it provide details on any specific dates or timelines of when these fraudulent calls have occurred or been reported.
Residents are advised to be cautious of unsolicited calls demanding money, especially those that create a sense of urgency or involve threats of arrest or further legal action. Law enforcement agencies typically do not request payment via wire transfer or gift cards for the release of individuals. Any resident who receives such a suspicious call is encouraged to hang up and verify the information independently by contacting the relevant law enforcement agency directly using an independently obtained phone number, not one provided by the caller.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who believes they have been targeted or has fallen victim to this scam to report it immediately to their office or local law enforcement to aid in the investigation and prevent further victimization.
